I have been extremely fortunate throughout my career to have worked and been influenced by many fantastic women and I would like to thank all of them to have been part of my career growth. But, the biggest inspiration of my career has been my late grandmother, Laurencienne Seguin.
You see, while my grandfather was a farmer, my grandmother was his biggest support system. Not only did she help him with all the farm responsibilities, but she cooked, cleaned and raised 11 children! Once the children were all grown up and left the house in pursuit of schooling and families, she wanted to buy things for herself and the house, but my grandfather said that she couldn’t get extra money as he was the head of the household. So, what did my grandma do? She got a job without his permission! What a novel concept for the times!
She started working in a retirement home as the head cook. And, because she loved children, she got her bus license and started driving bus loads of children to school every day. All of this happened when she was in her mid 50’s, and having never had a career before! She did this for many years and loved it! She touched the hearts of all the kids that she drove to and from school every day, and remembered their birthdays and special events. I’m sure all those kids, now adults, remember her fondly.
She showed me that it’s never too late to start a new career at any age; that as a woman, I need to be in charge of my own career and future. She taught me that everyone is important and to always kind and thoughtful of others.
I wanted to honor my grandma and her values when I started my own company, but her name was too close to a financial institution that we all know, LOL. She was born in October, so I decided to go with her birthstone which is the opal. Hence, the name OPAL Corporate Connections came to be.
Grandma, I miss you every day and hope you’re proud of what I’ve made of myself. XOXOX
